Printing Workshop (Acid is my life)...
His studio was a very large space equipped with printing tables, printing presses, Printing machines, large bathroom, living area, bedroom, and an attic exhibition space decorated with Didier's work, it is obvious he is very dedicated and enthusiastic about what he produces and this comes through in his space as well as his personality, it was a great opportunity to be a part of this amongst other student for these two days.
perfect printing table for lots of people to work at the same time
We used Copper plates of which some had previous text etched into them. We worked on them with different application techniques then printed them side by side using the mechanical printing press above.
We also used a different type of printing machine, a very old typography printer
This machine creates multiple prints from rolling ink onto the desired arranged elements, fixed onto a printing plate seen below:
This technique created multiples of prints, I played around with reprinting my design on the same paper:
We also mixed this two techniques together to create some interesting results:
At lunch time we had to go to the 'truck stop, its greeeat' says Didier as he forgot that most shops are closed on Mondays
3 course meal at lunch time I have no idea how people is France are motivated to go back to work after that.. 'Do people in England have a nap after lunch? You can if you want to we don't all have to do work' amazing
After a day of creating prints Didier offered us his own recipe rum cocktail, and some of the final year students of the art school joined us for a BBQ and wine at the nearby lake.
which soon turned into drinking more wine, talking bad French, and playing with fire crackers Sanctioned by our tutor.
The girls were very kindly were allocated the bedroom to spend the night while the boys slept on the hard floor of the studio 'If we do some work tomorrow morning its a bonus' 'we will start whenever we wake up its no problem'
The next morning we all woke up feeling a little worse for wear and we were greeted with coffee and giant croissants!
We spent the morning finishing off some prints, packing them up then we headed back to the studio.
24 hours spent in an engraving studio that I will never forget!
In the afternoon we planned how we wanted to use our prints to create some kind of book...
and the next day we got to work creating a book that tells a story by using the prints in some way.
I chose to create a book using the busyness of each print to show the transition from confusion to gaining more understanding when arriving in a new location.
Why work inside when its a beautiful day
My finished book:
Our final books:
Our books were joined with different approaches of book making from other workshops:
I really enjoyed being part of this workshop, it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience for me to learn in terms of new techniques as well as different approaches and a different culture. Learning and exhibiting among a great group of talented people.
